Отбелязва се от 24 май 1909 г., когато в Швеция са създадени първите в Европа 9 национални парка.
Странджа е най-голямата защитена природна територия в България, създадена за да опазва уникалните екосистеми и биоразнообразие, както и за съхраняване на самобитните странджански фолклор, култура и историческо наследство. Нейната територия е над 1% от територията на страната. През 1933 г. именно тук е обявен първият резерват в България – Силкосия.
Странджа е единствената българска територия, включена в петте приоритетни за опазване територии в Централна и Източна Европа. Над Странджа преминава вторият по големина прелетен път на птиците в Европа – Виа Понтика. Общият брой на видовете хабитати е 121, като по този показател паркът е на първо място сред защитените територии в Европа. Като всяко място на брега на Черно море, Странджа е застрашена от унищожаване чрез незаконно строителство, а планинската му част и запазените гори привличат секачите-бракониери.
Защитените територии със самостоятелен статут, съгласно чл. 5 от Закона за защитените територии в парк „Странджа“ са 32 на брой. Най-известните от тях са „Парория“, „Устие на река Велека“, „Докузак“, „Руденово“, „Силистар“, „Кривинизово“, „Моряне“, „Камъка“ и други.
Дирекцията на природен парк Странджа е създадена през ноември 1995 г. Дирекцията е отговорна за опазване на биоразнообразието и дивата природа в парка. Дейностите на дирекцията на ПП Странджа са залесителни, консервационни образователни, промоционални, консултантски и туристически, промоционални, строителни дейности, осъществяване на научни и приложни изследователски дейности; създава и актуализира поддържа база данни; опазаване и регионално развитие на населените места на територията на парка.

Strandzha Nature Park is the largest protected area in Bulgaria spanning a territory of 1,161 square kilometres 448 sq m in the Strandzha Mountain in the extreme south-eastern corner of the country on the border with Turkey. It was established on 25 January 1995 to protect ecosystems and biodiversity of European importance, as well as the traditional cultural, historical and folklore heritage of the region.
The nature park is situated in Burgas Province with two towns, Malko Tarnovo and Ahtopol, and several villages within its territory. It includes five nature reserves: Silkosiya, Sredoka, Tisovitsa, Uzunbodzhak and Vitanovo. Silkosiya is the oldest one in Bulgaria, established in 1933, and Uzunbodzhak is included in the World Network of Biosphere Reserves under the UNESCO Man and Biosphere Programme. The whole territory is part of the network of nature protection areas of the European Union, Natura 2000.
Currently, the Directorate of Strandja Nature Park is a specialized territorial unit of the Executive Forest Agency (EFA) to the Ministry of Agriculture and Foods. DNP implements the state policy for management and control of the protected territory with the aim of long-term conservation of its unique nature and ensuring a sustainable socio-economic development of the region. DNP is responsible for the two protected zones in Strandja – the conservation of the wild birds and the natural habitats. The spectre of activities of the Directorate includes actions aimed at conservation and restoration of the biological and landscape diversity; educational, promotional, consulting and advertising activities; construction and maintenance of the infrastructure of the Park to service the tourist and recreational industry; implementation of scientific and applied research activities, Supports the development of tourism and recreation on the territory of the Park and its surrounding areas; maintains records and database for the territory of the Nature Park, Organizes and implements activities focusing on the conservation of the cultural-historical heritage. The Directorate implements various environmental initiatives, encourages local communities to work together and facilitates the expansion of tourist services in the region. On the territory of DNP 3 visitor centers are working very successful.
